"I Can't Die Now." Lindsey Graham Eerie Final Joke Said Mere Hours Before He Did.

That was Lindsey Graham's last documented joke about his own mortality. He made it Saturday evening to a friend, shortly after getting off the phone with President Trump. He was feeling unwell. Someone told him to go to a doctor immediately. He said he'd go Sunday — after his scheduled morning television appearance.

"I can't die now," he said. "I still need to do the Russia sanctions, get Iran sorted out and do Israeli-Saudi normalization."

He died hours later.

The three things on his list weren't small. A Russia sanctions bill he'd been actively pushing in the Senate. The Iran situation — on every foreign policy desk in Washington for months. Israeli-Saudi normalization, a deal that would reshape the Middle East if it ever happened. Graham listed all three the way most people list errands.

The call with Trump that preceded it wasn't small either. Graham had just returned from Ukraine. He was briefing the President on what he'd seen on the ground, talking through sanctions strategy, discussing the possibility of U.S. strikes on Iran. Then he hung up, told someone he felt off, and decided the doctor could wait until morning.

He didn't make it to morning.

There are members of Congress who haven't moved three things in a full term. Graham was trying to knock out three in a weekend, on a night when his body was telling him something was wrong.

The critiques of Graham over the years were real — on immigration, on compromise votes, on moments when the base wanted spine and got diplomacy. None of that is what Saturday night looked like. Saturday night looked like a man who had every reason to stop and simply didn't.

The FBI is assisting local authorities in investigating the circumstances of his death. No signs of foul play have emerged. What the investigation finds will answer how he died. The question of who he was got answered in one sentence, on a Saturday night, when he said he wasn't finished yet.

The to-do list outlasted him.
