That was Lindsey Graham's last documented joke about his own mortality. He made it Saturday evening to a friend, shortly after getting off the phone with President Trump. He was feeling unwell. "I can't die now," he said. "I still need to do the Russia sanctions, get Iran sorted out and do Israeli-Saudi normalization."

He died hours later.

The three things on his list weren't small. A Russia sanctions bill he'd been actively pushing in the Senate. The Iran situation — on every foreign policy desk in Washington for months. Israeli-Saudi normalization, a deal that would reshape the Middle East if it ever happened. Graham listed all three the way most people list errands.

The call with Trump that preceded it wasn't small either. Graham had just returned from Ukraine.
