Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) arrived at a congressional hearing about the Smithsonian with one lens for everything. Racism. She used it on the hearing itself, calling it "Republicans' white-pride rally disguised as a congressional hearing." She used it on the Republican men running the subcommittee, accusing them of opposing museum changes because of their "fragile egos." Then she tried to use it on the World Cup. Her own witness said no.

The hearing — titled "Rewriting American History: Examining the Smithsonian's Efforts to Reshape the Past" — was called to examine whether the Smithsonian under Director Dr. Anthea Hartig had injected ideological bias into America's museums. Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) and other Republicans had come prepared to press the institution on its curatorial direction. Crockett had a different agenda.

She described the recent World Cup as having "captured the imaginations of the entire world when they saw all these people of color that was playing for all these teams." She wasn't building to a point about athletic achievement. She was building to an accusation.

"If you recall, the last two teams, it was Argentina and Spain, and it seemed like the vast majority of the world was rooting for Argentina — or actually against Argentina, right?" Crockett said. Then the landing: "There's also a racist history."

So the billions of fans who picked a side in a soccer final weren't reacting to team quality, tactics, or rivalries. They were engaged in a global act of racial sorting. That's the theory Crockett brought to a hearing about museum curation — after opening the same hearing by calling it a white-pride rally.

Some people just want to see everything as racist.

Yale history professor David Blight — Crockett's own witness — wasn't interested in co-signing. Six words: "Spain had the best team. Maybe that's why they were rooting for them?"

People picked Spain because Spain was better at soccer. Revolutionary stuff.

The silence after Blight's response is the real content. Crockett set up the racial narrative, teed it up for her own side's expert, and he answered it with the most obvious explanation available.

The left has spent years insisting that every institution, every cultural moment, and every preference is secretly about race — museum displays, school curricula, real estate pricing, and now which soccer team you root for. The theory requires universal buy-in to function. The moment someone on your own team says "actually, Spain was just better," the whole architecture deflates.

Crockett called a hearing about museum bias a white-pride rally. She called the men running it fragile. She called World Cup fandom racist. Her own expert witness called it a soccer game. Only one of them had to answer a question to get there.
