Michelle Obama's Former Aide Pocketed $686K While Her Refugee Nonprofit Bled Out

Krish O'Mara Vignarajah collected $686,000 in total compensation last year as CEO of Global Refuge, a Baltimore-based refugee resettlement nonprofit. That same year, the organization's revenue dropped 44 percent — from $304.3 million to $170.4 million.

The money kept flowing to the corner office. The mission statement kept talking about compassion. The actual operation was collapsing.

Global Refuge — formerly known as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service — has been around since 1939 and claims to have helped resettle more than 800,000 refugees in the United States. O'Mara Vignarajah, 47, is a former aide to Michelle Obama who also worked under Hillary Clinton and John Kerry at the State Department. Her nonprofit biography describes a commitment to "helping people reimagine the possibilities while providing a soft place to land."

The landing was softer for some than others. In 2024, O'Mara Vignarajah pulled in $699,000 — a base salary of $526,536 plus a $172,963 bonus. When the organization's revenue cratered by nearly half, her compensation dropped a grand total of 2 percent. The bonus disappeared, but the base salary jumped to $686,000, absorbing most of the difference. The refugees got a 44 percent revenue cut. The CEO got a rounding error.

A CEO whose organization lost $134 million in revenue in a single year managed to keep her personal compensation virtually unchanged. That's not nonprofit leadership. That's insulation.

The organization's own website says it is "committed to helping people reimagine the possibilities." The possibility that executive compensation might bear some relationship to organizational performance apparently wasn't one of them.

Global Refuge's revenue relies heavily on federal contracts through the State Department and Health and Human Services — the same pipeline the Trump administration has been tightening as part of broader reforms to refugee resettlement spending. When government money contracts, a nonprofit that depends on it either adapts or hemorrhages. Global Refuge hemorrhaged. The CEO adapted her base salary upward.

This is the pattern with Obama-world nonprofits. The branding is compassion. The org chart is patronage. Former aides cycle from government into executive suites at organizations funded by government, drawing private-sector salaries underwritten by public money. The refugees are the product. The program is the vehicle. The salary is the point.
