Braiden Bell was the Portland Trail Blazers' new play-by-play announcer for exactly three days. On October 1, the team named the 29-year-old as the replacement for Kevin Calabro, who'd held the mic for more than 20 years. By October 4 — before Bell could even call the preseason home opener against the Golden State Warriors — he was out. The offense: tweets he posted when he was 14 and 15 years old.
The man who pulled the trigger was Devon Haskins, a reporter at Portland's KGW.
Haskins ran a story spotlighting Bell's teenage social media posts as though they were breaking news about a sitting governor. KGW news director John Tierney promoted the piece. The station's own reporting included a detail that should have killed the story before it ran: "KGW's review did not locate any offensive tweets from Bell after he became an adult." They published it anyway.
Think about that sentence for a second. The newsroom conducted its own review. The review confirmed that every post in question came from a child. And the editorial decision was to run with it — knowing the inevitable result would be a 29-year-old man losing his career over things he typed in middle school.
The Trail Blazers, in full corporate panic mode, cut Bell loose before the story was 48 hours old. A decade and a half of clean adult behavior, a professional track record that included work with the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and the G League's Valley Suns — none of it mattered.
Users, upset with penalizing a man for things he said as a child, started digging into Haskins' and Tierney's own social media histories. What they found was apparently damaging enough that Haskins deleted his entire X account rather than face the same standard he'd just applied to Bell. Tierney's old posts surfaced too. Neither man had the excuse of being 14 when they wrote theirs.
Bell's post-2015 social media was almost entirely about sports. A kid who said dumb things online grew up, built a broadcasting career, and earned the biggest job of his professional life. The adults who destroyed it couldn't survive their own standard for 72 hours.
