The Woman Who Sued Trump for $88 Million Is Now the One Under Investigation

E. Jean Carroll — the writer who accused President Trump of assaulting her in a Manhattan department store dressing room sometime in the mid-1990s, then collected $5 million from one jury and $83 million from another — is now the subject of a Department of Justice criminal perjury investigation. The hunter has become the hunted, and honestly, we didn't even need to set an alarm for this one.

Remember when this was supposed to destroy Trump? Funny how that works out.

The DOJ probe, first reported by CNN on May 27, centers on whether Carroll committed perjury during depositions — specifically regarding undisclosed funding she received to pursue her legal crusade against the president. And wouldn't you know it, the name behind the checkbook is Reid Hoffman, the billionaire Democrat donor and LinkedIn co-founder who quietly bankrolled Carroll's legal fees. A detail she apparently forgot to mention under oath during her 2022 deposition.

Small oversight. Could happen to anyone writing checks with someone else's billions.

According to American Wire News, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has recused himself from the case. CNN's own chief legal affairs correspondent Paula Reid confirmed as much, reporting that "acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, I am told, has recused from this case." The investigation has been handed to Andrew S. Boutros, the Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.

CNN, doing what CNN does, tried to frame this as political overreach, writing that "the investigation comes at a volatile moment in a Justice Department that appears to be increasingly controlled by Mr. Trump." Translation: they're mad the DOJ is finally investigating their side.

The DOJ isn't playing coy about it either. A spokesperson stated plainly: "We can confirm that no U.S. Attorney's Office has declined to investigate any case." In other words, this thing is moving forward whether the New York Times editorial board likes it or not.

Let's rewind the tape. Carroll accused Trump of an assault that allegedly happened roughly 30 years ago. No police report. No contemporaneous evidence that held up to serious scrutiny. But two New York juries awarded her a combined $88 million — $5 million in the assault case and $83 million in the defamation case. The media celebrated like it was V-E Day.

Now we find out the whole legal effort may have been funded by a Democrat mega-donor, and Carroll may have lied about it under oath. If that's not poetic justice, the phrase has no meaning.

The woman who was supposed to be Trump's downfall is now lawyering up against his DOJ. You love to see it.
