The U.S. Mint is striking a brand-new $1 gold coin featuring President Trump's portrait, announced on the exact day America turns 250 years old. And of course Democrats are losing their minds over the commemorative coin -- and having to spend it.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the announcement this week, tying the coin to America's semiquincentennial — that's the 250th anniversary of the founding, for anyone who went to public school after Common Core. The front side of the coin has President Trump's face on it with the words "In God We Trust." And the reverse side of the coin features the U.S. seal alongside the number 250, marking the occasion with the kind of patriotic flair that makes progressive graphic designers break out in hives.
Bessent's statement was characteristically direct: "As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the U.S. Mint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism. Featuring President Trump, it celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all."
The coin comes on the heels of Trump's earlier decision to end production of the penny during his second term — a move that was equal parts fiscal common sense and the kind of executive action that drives the "he's a dictator" crowd absolutely sideways. The penny costs more to make than it's worth, which is a sentence that also describes most federal agencies.
Presidential coins aren't new. The U.S. Mint has produced $1 coins honoring past presidents for years. But the timing here is the whole game. Tying Trump's coin to the 250th birthday of the republic isn't just numismatic tradition — it's a statement that this administration considers itself part of the founding legacy, not a departure from it.
The usual critics will frame this as vanity. A president putting his face on currency, how unprecedented, how authoritarian. Except it isn't unprecedented at all. It's literally what the Presidential $1 Coin Program was designed to do. Every modern president gets one eventually. Trump just gets his while he's still in office and while America is throwing a birthday party.
