President Trump just nominated Cameron Hamilton — the same man he fired as acting FEMA administrator last year — to permanently lead the agency. He also tapped Kari Lake to be the U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica. The media meltdowns from these two picks alone will power a small city for a week.
You really have to admire the energy here. Most presidents would quietly bury someone they canned. Trump brings them back with a promotion.
Here's the backstory on Hamilton, as reported by Just The News. Cameron Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL who served on SEAL Team Eight, was installed as FEMA's acting administrator in January 2025. He lasted until May 8, 2025, when he was shown the door after publicly contradicting the administration's position on FEMA's future.
The day before his firing — May 7, 2025 — Hamilton testified before a House Appropriations subcommittee. Connecticut Democrat Rep. Rosa DeLauro asked him point-blank whether FEMA should be abolished. Hamilton answered, "I do not believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency." The next day, he was out.
DHS even subjected him to a polygraph test over alleged meeting leaks. He passed. Didn't matter.
Now, a full year later, Trump has renominated the same man to permanently run the agency he was fired from defending. If you're confused, don't be. This is vintage Trump. Hamilton proved he was willing to fight for the job instead of just collecting a paycheck, and apparently that counts for something — even if the fight was with his own boss.
Hamilton would become the first permanent FEMA administrator of Trump's second term if confirmed. The agency has cycled through three temporary leaders since he was ousted.
Then there's Kari Lake. After losing the 2024 Arizona Senate race to Ruben Gallego and serving as acting CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media — the outfit that oversees Voice of America — Lake is now headed to the Caribbean. She responded to the nomination by saying, "Thank you to President Trump for nominating me to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica."
Lake also noted Jamaica is a country she "knows very well." Whether that means she's visited a few times or has a timeshare in Montego Bay, we may never know.
Trump also nominated Pennsylvania state Senator Doug Mastriano as ambassador to the Slovak Republic and David Cummins to lead the Transportation Security Administration for a five-year term. Mastriano, who lost the 2022 Pennsylvania governor's race to Josh Shapiro, said he was "deeply honored and humbled" by the nomination.
The establishment media is going to have a field day with these picks. A fired FEMA chief coming back for round two. A Senate race loser heading to Jamaica. A gubernatorial loser heading to Slovakia. You can already hear the keyboards clacking at the Washington Post.
But here's the thing — Trump has never cared about the resume the Beltway thinks you need. He cares about loyalty, guts, and whether you'll actually do the job instead of just warming a chair. Hamilton stood up in front of Congress and said what he believed, even knowing it might cost him. It did. And now he's getting another shot.
As for Kari Lake in Jamaica? Honestly, there are worse gigs. And the confirmation hearings alone will be worth the price of admission.
